Established in 1891 by Gerard Philips and his father, Frederik, the company traces its roots to Zaltbommel, where Frederik, a banker, funded the purchase and renovation of an empty factory in Eindhoven. In 1892, the company commenced the production of carbon filament lamps and other electro-technical products. This historical site now serves as a museum. Philips' initial product was the light bulb. Currently, the company employs approximately 80,000 people across 100 countries. It received the royal designation in 1998 and dropped the word "Electronics" from its name in 2013.
